Whether you're looking to improve your career, relationships, or overall well-being, our work together can either be all inclusive, or if only interested in talk therapy, this is what you can expect.
Counseling will proceed in several overlapping stages. First, we will spend a few sessions getting to know each other. Research shows that the likelihood of a favorable outcome depends on the quality of the relationship between the client and practioner. Second, we will focus on what brought you to counseling and engage in a process of discovery. I will want to know a little about your presenting problem, your history, how you experience your issues, how they may impact others and how others may impact you. Third, once we gather that information, we together will come up with a plan to help you to deal with or overcome the issue that brought you here. At this stage we will be working as a team both in and out of session to achieve your goals. Since I believe that it is important to avoid a one-size-fits-all approach, what occurs in session depends on your goals. I consider myself an Integrative Wellness Professional, meaning I approach the issues from several perspectives: emotionally (exploring your feelings); psychodynamically (exploring early childhood influences); relationally (exploring the quality of your relationships); and cognitive-behaviorally (exploring how your thoughts and behaviors impact the issue that brought you here). Also, if desired, I incorporate aspects of nutrition, fitness, lifestyle choices, and environmental factors into our work together. Please keep in mind although I have a degree in Marriage and Family Therapy, I am NOT a liscensed therpist. This means I do not provide diagnosis and treatment of mental illness. If during our work together I feel you would be better served by a liscensed professional, I will refer you out to a colleague. In between sessions I may assign tasks for you to do at home, which will be discussed at our next session. We will work together to create meaningful tasks that will expedite your progress. Also, you have complete freedom to refuse any treatment intervention suggested.
I do maintain records of our sessions, but they are for my personal reference only. Because I am not a liscensed therapist, I am not required by law to keep a professional record of our work together. I do not take insurance, nor will your insurance company reimburse you for my services. Although I am not a liscensed therapist, I hold the same confidentiality as if I was. Our conversations are completely confidential, and in no way will I discuss your case with anyone without prior written consent from you.
